Former Sri Lankan cricketer and international cricket umpire Kumar Dharmasena said a 10-year plan must be followed to build cricket in Sri Lanka.

Speaking at an event in Ayagamaa on Sunday (December 17), Dharmasena said that although cricket has faced a setback in Sri Lanka at present, he hopes it will be resolved in the future.

“Problems will not be solved by simply changing the members of the selection committee. It is okay if the selection committee is changed every three or four years. But I personally believe that a policy targeting 10 years should be implemented.”

Dharmasena pointed out that if SLC is focusing on selecting a captain, it is necessary to find a player who can take on the responsibility of captaincy for at least five years.

“We need to find a good leader for 2027. I believe cricket will never fade away in the country and will remain a prominent sport in the country. We are currently facing a small setback, which I believe will be resolved in the future,” he said.

Pointing out that former cricketers, like Sanath Jayasuriya, have now entered the SLC, Kumar Dharmasena emphasized that new developments can be expected in the future.

However, he stressed that if the authorities work with a plan, the problems can be resolved in a shorter period. (Newswire)
