The last few months have been tough for Zimbabwe, who failed to qualify for the 2023 Cricket World Cup and then failed to secure a place in the upcoming 2024 ICC T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA, scheduled for next year. .
Following the dismal performance, head coach and former Zimbabwe captain Dave Houghton has resigned from his position with immediate effect as reported by Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC).
After finishing third in the Africa zone qualifiers, Houghton explained that Zimbabwe needed a new voice in the dressing room, after witnessing the breakdown of the relationship with the players.
In a statement, ZC president, Tafenjwa Mokohlane, thanked Dutton for his services and expressed hope that Zimbabwe would build on the foundation laid by the former great.
This is what Mokohlane said
“Although the last few months have been disappointing as we failed to qualify for both the Over-50 World Cup and the T20 World Cup, they should not overshadow all the work he (Houghton) has done over the past year to rebuild the foundations for success over the long term. the long. Dave leaves the team with our sincerest thanks for his tireless efforts and we look forward to working with him in a different role as we seek to turn our fortunes around on the pitch.
Houghton (66 years old) took over from former coach Lalchand Rajput in June 2022, who moved on to become the technical director. Interestingly, ZC reported that Houghton will continue to work with the board in an undisclosed role moving forward.
The board will soon form a provisional technical squad for Zimbabwe’s limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka, which begins next month.
