Veteran South Africa batsman Dean Elgar could announce his retirement from Test cricket after the two-Test series against India starting later in December. According to South African newspaper Rapport, Elgar is considering making a retirement call as he believes he is no longer in Test coach Shukri Konrad’s plans in the near future.
“Just anticipating the news [of his retirement] “It will break soon,” a source was quoted as saying.
In February, Temba Bavuma replaced Elgar as South Africa’s Test captain. Elgar was also reportedly scheduled to lead a depleted South Africa side in a Test series against New Zealand in February. South Africa will be without several key players for the series, as they will be taking part in the SA20 tournament at around the same time. However, talks between Cricket South Africa and Elgar did not go as expected.

“In the past, I didn’t get much credit for what I did. I don’t think there was much of a relationship between me and the South African cricket fans. A lot of the time, what I did was swept under the rug. The Indian Express quoted Elgar as saying In 2018: “People forget that you need cricketers like me in every team.”
“I’ve found a way to deal with the feedback, create an atmosphere around me. Because I’m not playing in the IPL. IPL players get a lot more credit, so be it. They deserve it. So I’m not a big person to really let go and enjoy people kissing my ass because I’m doing something,” he added. I’m supposed to do it!”
Elgar has played 84 Tests for the Proteas so far, having scored 5,146 runs at an average of 37.28.
