Frontier’s Debbie Schrofer was named District Coach of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
Schrover led Frontier to a 16-3 record and the Section VI Class AA championship, defeating Sweet Home in the final. The results of the match were 25-23, 25-22, 25-17.
Frontier’s season in the Far West Region ended with a 3-0 loss to Webster Schroeder by scores of 25-23, 25-13, 25-23.
Lancaster’s Becky Edwards was named Section VI Coach of the Year by the New York Volleyball Coaches Association.
Edwards led the Legends (17-2) to the inaugural Class AAA championship and Far West Regional championship.
Lancaster lost to Fairport in the regional championship 18-25, 25-14, 25-20, 25-23.
Portville senior Lillian Bentley was named Section VI Player of the Year by the state association.

Bentley had 486 kills, 147 blocks, 99 digs, 94 aces and 50 blocks to help the Panthers win a third straight Class C state championship. She was also named to the first team all-state.
Hoops fall on the road
The Niagara Falls boys basketball team from Charlotte, North Carolina, is back with two wins in the BAM Winter Classic.
On Friday night, Trey Gayle scored the winning goal in a 46-45 victory over West Charlotte. Earlier in the season, Gayle made the go-ahead three in an overtime win over defending champion Victor.
On Thursday at North Carolina State, the Wolverines fell behind 13-2 before pulling off a 65-53 win over Olympian (Charlotte). Ephraim Strong and Omarion Ralands each scored 17 points. Nick Estelle added 14 points and Mike Taylor eight points and 12 rebounds.
The Vols (5-1) next play Health Sciences (4-1) on Wednesday.
The boundaries remain perfect
Frontier beat Health Sciences 44-35 in the championship game of the Live Like Luca tournament on Friday at St. Francis.
The Falcons (6-0) slowed down the pace on zone defense and dominated the boards in the win. Matt LaRoche led Frontier with 16 points and Kean Bennett had 10 points.
Rhythm was also key as the Falcons beat host St. Francis, 36-35, in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday.
St. Francis beat Williamsville East, 53-51, in the consolation game on Friday behind 16 points from Jeremiah Neely and 14 from Nichols Benko.
Mason Evans had 23 points for the Flames.
Klein reaches 1000
St. Mary’s basketball player Kyra Klein notched the 1,000th point of her high school career in the Lancers’ 73-53 win over Randolph, which reached the Class C finals last season.
Klein, a 5-foot-7 senior, scored 16 points in the win.
Emily MacDonald added 21, Missy Kovac 14, and Jada Mashat 10 for the Lancers, who were hosting a Public vs. Private Showcase on Saturday.
Football at the state level
The New York State Sportswriters Association will release statewide football teams for small schools on January 10 and for large schools on January 17.
