Pat Cummins became the second most expensive buy in the history of IPL auctions.

In the IPL 2024 auction, Australian cricket captain Pat Cummins emerged as the center of attention, bagging a whopping Rs 20.50 crore contract with Sunrisers Hyderabad. He became the second most expensive buy in IPL history after compatriot Mitchell Starc, who was sold for Rs 24.75 crore to Kolkata Knight Riders.

The IPL auction saw a rapidly escalating Pat Cummins bidding war between Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad. In the end, Sunrisers Hyderabad emerged victorious, breaking the Rs 20-crore mark and making Cummins the first cricketer in IPL history with such a massive price tag.

Jason Gillespie talks about Pat Cummins’ prices in the IPL

Former Australia spinner Jason Gillespie has cast doubt on the astronomical price tag, asserting that Cummins may be better suited to Test cricket than the frenetic pace of T20.

Gillespie expressed his reservations about Cummins’ suitability for T20 cricket. “Pat is obviously a good player and a high-quality captain, and we’ve seen that. I don’t think T20 is his best format, I think he’s a Test player personally. I think Test cricket is his absolute bread and butter.” Former Australia player Gillespie told SEN Radio.

While Cummins in T20Is has picked up 55 wickets in 50 matches at an average of 24.54 and an economy rate of 7.37, demonstrating his efficiency in the shortest format, Gillespie remains unconvinced. He’s a good T20 player, make no mistake. But this is huge amounts of money for me.” Gillespie added.

Gillespie has shown his approval for another Australian player, Mitchell Starc, who bagged a mega deal worth Rs 24.75 crore with Kolkata Knight Riders. Although Starc has been absent from the IPL since 2015, Gillespie considered him a worthwhile investment.

“I think he’s a great buy. It’s a lot of money, we all admit that, but the Indian Premier League is a very rich league. I’m very happy for Mitch. “I think this highlights how important it is for teams to value left-arm fast bowling and left-arm swing bowling “ He said.
