Australian players had a great day at the recently concluded IPL 2024 auction after skipper Pat Cummins and star bowler Mitchell Starc emerged as the top two most expensive buys in IPL history.
KKR bought Mitchell Starc for 24.75 crores, while Pat Cummins went to SRH for 20.50 crores. The internet was divided after the auction as there were debates over whether or not Starc and Cummins were worth the higher sum.
In the latest events, former Australian Jason Gillespie expressed his happiness with the Australian players, but expressed his surprise at the price of Pat Cummins.
Gillespie noted that Cummins is a Test player and not the ideal cricketer for T20 cricket. “Pat is a skilled bowler and an effective leader. We have witnessed it. However, I don’t think T20 is where he excels the most. In my opinion, he is better suited to Test cricket, and that is where his strengths really lie.
Gillesy’s position on Stark
On the other hand, Gillespie heaped praise on Starc who made nearly Rs five crore more than Cummins.
“I think it’s a valuable acquisition. It’s a big sum of money, we’re all aware of that, but given the financial scale of the Indian Premier League, it makes sense. I’m happy for Mitch.”
“I think this highlights how important it is for teams to value left-arm fast bowling and left-arm swing bowling,” Gillespie said.
