The Melbourne Renegades take on the Perth Scorchers in Match 4 of the 2023 Big Bash League on Sunday (December 10). Simmonds Stadium in Geelong hosted this encounter. There were strange scenes where misbehavior occurred on the field and the match was canceled because of that.

The match officials decided to abandon the match and as a result, the Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers shared a point each. After yesterday (December 9) was spoiled by rain, today’s match was canceled due to the pitch. Therefore both matches could not be completed on the weekend.

Regarding the points table, Brisbane Heat continues to lead the standings with three points from two matches. The Sydney Sixers are second in the points table after a winning start to the Big Bash League 2023.

The Adelaide Strikers’ opening match ended due to rain and they were awarded one point. They sit below the Sixers. Defending champions, Perth Scorchers, are out of contention in the competition after their match against the Renegades was cancelled. They follow the strikers in the points table.

Below the Scorchers sit the Rebels who have one point under their belt in two matches. They have a net run rate of -0.4. The Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Thunder are not yet in the competition and follow the Renegades.

The Melbourne Stars lost to the Brisbane Heat in their opening match. They have a net run rate of -5.15 after the heavy loss and sit at the bottom of the points table.

The match between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers has been canceled due to an unsafe pitch

In the fourth match of the Big Bash League 2023, Melbourne Renegades skipper Nick Maddinson won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Perth Scorchers haven’t had the best of starts as they lost Stephen Eskenazi to a duck in the first over. Cooper Connolly also struggled a bit and left at six.

Aaron Hardy looked good in the crease and was joined by Josh Inglis as both led the recovery work for the Renegades. There was an odd ball stuck in the surface and there was a lot of seam movement. Hitters struggled to time the ball.

The pair of Hardy and Inglis complained to the umpires. The referees talked among themselves and brought the players out. Scorchers were 30/2 in 6.5 overs at that stage. The match officials had a discussion with a representative of the Australian Cricket Association.

After a long discussion and receiving suggestions from both captains, the match referees decided to cancel the match. The match at Simmonds Stadium in Geelong was canceled due to an unsafe pitch. The two sides shared one point and it was a sad end to this blockbuster Sunday.

It rained a lot last night and the field was under covers most of the time. Stadium workers didn’t have enough time to prepare the field and the humidity didn’t help either.
