Maharaj suffered a strange injury in early 2023 [X.Com]
Cricket and injuries have become synonymous in recent times. Some injuries have prematurely ended players’ careers, while others have affected players’ values in the leagues. One such incident occurred in cricket when the outstanding South African player, Keshav Maharaj, was taken off the field. This incident occurred at Wanderers Stadium during a match.
When Maharaj suffered a strange injury
While playing against West Indies, the South African went down holding his Achilles tendon after celebrating Kyle Mayers’ wicket. During the match, the player reviewed an LBW decision against Kyle Myers which was initially rejected by the referee. He celebrated because the decision came in his favor along with his teammates. Myers collapsed holding his heels, prompting the medical team to rush onto the field.
Kyle Mayers became the sixth wicket to fall on the day, as Keshav Maharaj had dismissed Roston Chase earlier. Maharaj was then stretchered off after receiving initial medical attention, revealing that he had suffered a tendon injury in his left ankle. This injury added to South Africa’s woes, as they had already lost Mulder to injury earlier in the match. Despite Keshav Maharaj’s absence for the rest of the innings, South Africa managed to pull off a convincing 284-run win over West Indies.
With the injury, the player was unable to continue the Middlesex stint, which was set to become his county stint after Lancashire and Yorkshire took 17 and 38 wickets respectively at an impressive batting average.

After recovering from the injury, Keshav Maharaj made a strong comeback, earning his place in the bilateral series and securing his selection for the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. He has emerged as one of the highest wicket-takers in the tournament. Despite his individual success, South Africa were unable to progress beyond the semi-finals, and were eliminated by Australia at Eden Gardens.
