BIG RAPIDS – As many athletic coaches look back at the 2023 fall seasons and prepare for next year, one of the biggest stories will be the emergence of the Big Rapids volleyball program as a strong contender for this year and 2024.
Among the returning starters who are already focused on the upcoming BR season is sophomore Alydia Kilpatrick, who currently plays club volleyball.
It was her first year of college with coach Emily Van Keulen’s team, and she got the good news about her team’s status after tryouts.
“I think it was kind of a surprise,” she said, adding that she was nervous about the expectations, but excited. “I think it took a couple of games (to feel comfortable).”
Kilpatrick focused on being a defensive specialist for the Cardinals.
“The key is to not let it get to your head and be prepared for the ball,” she said. “I think I have improved a lot especially in the back row. The key is to be consistent and confident in what you are doing.
Big Rapids finished the season 15-12.
“I think we had a good season,” Kilpatrick said. “We came out with a lot of energy.
“I think one night our senior night was really good and we beat Morley by a set.”
Van Keulen is looking forward to Kilpatrick having two more seasons.
“Aledia is a great addition to our backfield,” Van Keulen said. “She’s very athletic and has a lot of speed. It helps because her reaction time is very quick. She also helped us earlier in the season with preparation.
Kilpatrick also takes pride in serving up his aces to spark the Cardinals’ offense. “Normally I would look for an open spot on the court,” she said.
Kilpatrick plays club volleyball and continues to play the sport.
“I love the way it uplifts the sport and encourages everyone,” she said.
