New Delhi: The Men’s Big Bash League in Australia introduced ‘Electra Stumps’ for the first time during a match between the Sydney Sixers and Adelaide Strikers on Saturday. Although the Electra trunks were first used during the Women’s Big Bash League, they were announced in a much bigger way on Saturday. Cricket legends Michael Vaughan and Mark Waugh explained to the audience exactly what Electra stumps are.

Much like dancing lights, Electra Stumps light up for different events accordingly, occurring in a cricket match. The new innovation not only looks good but also has the potential to attract more audience to the cricket ground.

What are electric trunks?

Electra Stumps are completely different from Flashing Stumps and Zin Bails (which came into effect in 2016). Unlike flashing logs (which light up when the log is broken), Electra’s logs are on for almost the entire game. It emits red light when the mixture is expelled.

When the batter hits a four or six, the stumps are dazzled with different bright colors moving upwards. A combination of red and white light goes out when the ball is not thrown, immediately indicating the referee’s decision.

The intervals between overs are also indicated by purple and blue lights to ensure that the energy during the game remains the same. While introducing such innovation not only enhances the viewer experience, it also paves the way for other franchises to follow in BBL’s footsteps.

Earlier, the BBL gave birth to Zing Bails – which lights up when logs break – which the ICC eventually accepted. Although Electra Stumps have already created a buzz, we have to see if the ICC accepts them in the future to make cricket more colorful and bright.
