Chennai: North Chennai residents can look forward to a new hangout spot by next summer as Thiruvottiyur Beach undergoes a major transformation. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has invited bids to appoint consultants to develop the five-km-long stretch between Thiruvottiyur and Baratti Nagar, which promises to offer an array of amenities and recreational facilities.
The upcoming project aims to create an attractive and lively space for residents to enjoy during the summer months. The beach will be equipped with volleyball courts, walking paths, gyms and more. Local legislator KP Shankar expressed confidence that this project will bring a significant change to the area, providing much-needed entertainment options to its residents. However, some residents are prioritizing flood mitigation measures in Thiruvottiyur, stressing the need for canals to drain rainwater into the sea. AVS Marimuthu, one of the organizers of the North Chennai People’s Rights Federation, called for a larger budget allocation to address these concerns, keeping in mind the ongoing development in the region.
CMDA Minister P K Sekar Babu assured that the rejuvenated beach will become a prominent entertainment hub for the people of North Chennai. Under the North Chennai Development Plan, CMDA has implemented 23 projects worth Rs 390 crore. The Thiruvottiyur Beach Rejuvenation and Revitalization Project, at an estimated cost of Rs 33.40 crore, aims to transform the beach into a public space enriched with community gathering areas, children’s play areas, outdoor gyms, public art installations, indigenous landscaping, and local and open retail spaces. – Air sports facilities and other essential public infrastructure.
Minister Babu stressed the need to accelerate postponed development projects, especially in the wake of Typhoon Meichuang, as the region is gradually recovering from its impact. Transforming Thiruvottiyur Beach into a thriving entertainment hub is in line with the vision for a more vibrant and inclusive North Chennai.
