Pakistan suffered an embarrassing 360-run defeat to Australia on Sunday (December 17) in the first Test of the ongoing three-match series in Perth. The Shan Masood-led side was asked to chase a target of 450 runs in the second innings to win the match, but achieved it all for just 89 runs in 30.2 overs. For the hosts, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood picked up three wickets each, and two Pakistani batsmen were sent to the pavilion by Nathan Lyon.
By taking his maiden wicket in the second innings, Lyon became the third Australian player and eighth overall to take 500 or more wickets in Test cricket.
The defeat in the Perth Test was Australia’s 15th successive win over Pakistan in Test matches played in Australia. After Pakistan suffered a shock collapse in the second innings of the Perth Test to lose the match, Iceland Cricket took to its official handle X (formerly Twitter) to ruthlessly crack down on Pakistan.
They tweeted that their 46.5% population wasn’t even born when Pakistan won their last Test in Australia.
“We did some demographic analysis and found that 45.6% of our X followers were not born when Pakistan last won a Test in Australia in 1995. This will rise to 45.8% unless they win the Boxing Day Test.”
For Pakistan, Saud Shakeel top-scored in the second half with 24 runs, and in the first half, Imam-ul-Haq scored 62 runs off 199 balls. The first Test in Perth was a forgettable Test for former captains Babar Azam (21, 14) and Sarfraz Ahmed (3, 4), and the duo are now facing harsh criticism from fans and pundits in Pakistan.
The second Test is scheduled to be played from 26 to 30 December at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and the final match will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground from 3 to 7 January 2024.
