Former West Indies captain Jason Holder, Nicholas Pooran and Kyle Mayers have declined central contracts from Cricket West Indies (CWI) for the 2023-24 season but have confirmed their availability for the T20I series during the contract year. CWI has issued an official statement announcing the central contract list for 2023-2024 for both men and women cricketers and confirmed that the three players have rejected the offer.
“Jason Holder, Kyle Mayers and Nicholas Pooran declined the offer of central contracts but confirmed their availability for all West Indies T20 Internationals during the contract year,” CWI said in a statement.
Contracts are offered based on players’ performance during the 2022-2023 evaluation period, following the recommendations of the selection committees and approval of the Board of Directors.
For the first time, four West Indies players were given central contracts, which included left-arm spinner Gudakesh Moti, right-handed batsman Casey Carty, and left-arm batsmen Tajnarine Chanderpaul and Alec Athanasi.
Desmond Haynes, the West Indies’ chief men’s selector, said the contracts offered were made with the upcoming “busy cricket year” in mind.
“With a busy year for cricket, in all three formats, we have had many detailed discussions with the head coaches about the type of cricket they want to play. We are very clear in the direction we want to go in. The players who have… “They have been offered contracts, and are among those we expect to feature, as we look to build towards challenging for the top spot when we host and compete in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on home soil.”
“The selectors have identified a cadre of players who we believe can take West Indies cricket forward,” said Anne Brown-John, West Indies women’s captain. “We have emphasized the development of younger players, which we see as pivotal in The road to international level. “We have several high-level bilateral series and major global events on the horizon, and with that in mind, we want our players to be prepared and ready for every occasion.”
