World gymnastics champion Rhys McClenaghan has added one final accolade to his stellar year as he has been named RTÉ Athlete of the Year 2023.
McLingan (24 years old) won the pommel horse gold at the European Gymnastics Championships held in Turkey last April.
He followed this up by defending his title at the World Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp in October.
McClenaghan topped a seven-member shortlist that included undisputed world boxing champion Katie Taylor, Irish rugby legend Johnny Sexton and Republic of Ireland national football team captain Katie McCabe.
“This means the world to me,” an overjoyed McClenaghan said upon receiving his award. “Thank you very much.”

“It’s unbelievable that I’m an Irish gymnast winning world titles, which has never happened before of course. I’m very proud to be able to do this.”

Brighton’s Evan Ferguson was named Young Athlete of the Year, while four-time hurling champions Limerick were named Team of the Year.
Irish rugby coach Andy Farrell was named Manager of the Year, while Paralympic runner Jason Smith was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
