Just over a month after a devastating car accident that tragically claimed the lives of three of them, the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack men’s volleyball team rallied around each other and took to court last night in Winnipeg.
In a game that was all about playing for each other and honoring teammates who couldn’t be there, the team won 3-1 (25-21, 28-26, 26-28, 25-19) over the Winnipeg Wesmen.
Matthew Hamilton put together one of the best games of his WolfPack career to finish with 17 kills, two digs, five blocks and eight digs.
Sam Flowerday notched 16 kills on just 33 attempts while Rylan Ibbetson added 14 on 27 attacks.
Setter Sam Elgert had a great game for the set with 54 assists in just four sets.
“That was for times 2, 15 and 19,” coach Pat Henley said after the score, referring to the jersey numbers of the three players who couldn’t be there.
Riley Brennen is scheduled to be transferred to GF Strong Recovery Center where he recovers from a severe spinal cord injury.
Owen Waterhouse remains at the Royal Inland Hospital suffering from severe brain trauma following the incident on November 29 outside the gates of Thompson Rivers University in McGill.
So far RCMP have not provided many details about the multi-vehicle crash that injured Wolfpack players and also claimed the life of Owyn McInnis.
A celebration of life for McInnis is scheduled for next Wednesday at the TCC gym.
