College volleyball: WSU assistant Schroeder promoted to head coach

Cory Schroeder has been named head volleyball coach at Washington State on Friday, athletic director Pat Chun announced.

Schroeder is the 13th head coach in program history, replacing Gene Greaney, who took over as head coach at West Virginia last month.

“We are excited to name Corey as our head volleyball coach,” Chun said. “Corey brings a new energy and passion to WSU volleyball. It has been clear throughout this year that he has earned the respect of our team and was a key component in the overall success of last season. We look forward to watching Corey lead and build our team.” Volleyball program.”

Schroeder joins Washington State’s staff as an assistant coach in the spring of 2023. He comes to the Palos after being part of three 20-win seasons over the past five years as women’s volleyball assistant head coach/recruiting coordinator at Wisconsin. -Green Bay.

Last season, Schroeder served as an assistant coach for the Cougars, and had a hand in one of the best years in program history. The Cougars went 26-8, reached the Round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament, posted seven Top 25 wins, and reached a No. 4 ranking before concluding the season ranked No. 11 nationally.

“I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity to lead Washington State volleyball into the next chapter in the program’s storied history,” Schroeder said. “Thank you Pat Chun and [Deputy Director of Athletics/SWA] Anne McCoy for giving me their trust and support throughout this process. In my first year at Washington State, the energy I felt from the Pullman community, Cougar fans and individuals within the Washington State Athletic Department was overwhelming. They’re all reasons why Pullman feels like home, and they’re the same reason our student-athletes love their experience at Washington State. “We have a group of high-character players returning next season, and I am excited to build on the foundation we will build together this spring.”

Schroder’s time in Green Bay began with a Horizon League championship in 2018 and the ensuing automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, the program’s first appearance in the tournament since 2003. His five-year stint with the Phoenix culminated in 2022 with the program’s highest win total (23 ) since 2003.
