Simone Biles took the world by storm in 2016, becoming a sensation at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She won four gold medals and one bronze medal, endearing her to all Americans.
During the closing ceremonies, Biles was selected by Team USA as the flag bearer, becoming the first gymnast ever to receive the honor. When she returned home, she found herself on the cover of Sports Illustrated and in several national commercials.
Everyone knew who Simone Biles was except for her current husband, Jonathan Owens.
During his last appearance on the hub podcast, Owens, who was sitting next to Biles, claimed that when the two first linked up on the dating app, he wasn’t aware of her career.
“I’m like, let me see who this is.” “I never cared for gymnastics, so that piqued my curiosity,” Owens said via People.
“The first thing I saw was that she had a bunch of stuff [Instagram] Followers. So I’m like, ‘Okay, it’s got to be good.’
This is an understatement.
Owens added that he was in training camp with Missouri Western at the time and wasn’t focused on the Olympics, so he somehow missed her rapid rise to fame. It also clearly eluded him for the next four years.
“When she won the Olympics, I was in college and we didn’t have NBC, we didn’t have Olympic channels, we were in… [training] camp [in] “Late July, early August,” he said. “So I don’t care. I never had a moment where I was going to watch it [her compete]”.
Owens also said he considered himself the “catch” in the relationship, which has since sparked some controversy, but the couple, who married in April, have shrugged it off.
