A man has been shot dead near the England cricket team’s Trinidad hotel.

England and West Indies are halfway through the T20 series, with the final two matches being played in Trinidad and Tobago The capital, Port of Spain, this week.

The two teams are staying at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Wrightson Road, where a man was killed in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police on the island, which has the sixth highest crime rate in the world, have launched an investigation

Official UK Government advice currently warns travelers that there is a “high level of violent crime” and a “risk of armed robbery” in Trinidad.

“Gang-related attacks and shootings are on the rise around downtown Port of Spain,” she added.

The PA news agency understands that before the shooting, the English players were banned from leaving the hotel unless it was for the purposes of a pre-arranged cricket or golf trip.

The incident did not jeopardize Tuesday’s match, England’s first in Trinidad in 14 years, and a team spokesman said there would be no change to security arrangements.

England trailed 2-1 in the T20 series and will be hoping to overturn the result in the final two matches.

“Obviously we want to win this series, but there is a World Cup coming up,” England international Liam Livingstone said earlier this week.

“There is a lot of focus on that and hopefully the next two games will give us a lot of confidence.”
