Owensboro volleyball player Kirsten Taylor is taking her career to the next level after signing to play for Kentucky Wesleyan. Taylor recently finished her final high school volleyball season which helped her make school history.
The Lady Red Devils may have lost the region championship to a powerhouse Owensboro Catholic team, but their tournament play was enough to get them to the regional tournament for the first time in program history. Not only did they play in regionals, but they also picked up a win after defeating Grayson County 3-1.
Taylor played a huge role in Owensboro’s offense as she finished second on the team in kills with 273 on the season as well as recording 48 aces. Taylor says having the opportunity to become a college athlete is surreal because she has been waiting for this moment since she was in sixth grade.
“It feels surreal, like crazy,” she said. “It’s like I’ve been waiting for this moment since sixth grade and it’s finally here and it’s crazy. I’m ready. I’ve worked for this forever.”
Taylor said she chose KWC not only because it was close to home, but because her family ties to the school made it feel like a second home.
“It really felt like home,” she said. “I grew up here, and my dad went to school there. My mom started working there recently, so I’m there a lot. It kind of feels like a second home.”
While she leaves high school athletics behind, Taylor said she will miss her teammates more than anything.
“I will really miss the bond I created with my team,” she said. “Like I said in my speech, they weren’t just my teammates, they were truly like my family. I’ve been playing with them since sixth grade, and I love them individually so much.”
