People walk to a higher place for shelter after the earthquake that struck Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the Noto region experienced a rapid series of earthquakes, with another 6.2-magnitude tremor striking shortly after the initial swarm.

The largest earthquakes prompted broadcasters to switch to special programs and issue urgent calls for affected residents to leave to higher areas.

“We realize that your home and all your possessions are precious to you, but your life is important above everything else. Run as high as you can,” an NHK announcer told viewers.
