Cindy Belt: A beacon of inspiration in high school volleyball

In the world of high school volleyball, one name stands out for its undeniable influence – Cindy Belt, Shelter Island High School volleyball coach. Recently, the Suffolk County Volleyball Coaches Association named her the League VII Coach of the Year, a distinction that marks the third such distinction in her illustrious career. This honor underscores her exceptional coaching skills, leadership and indelible impact on the volleyball community.

Journey of dedication

Belt’s time with volleyball spans 21 seasons, a journey that began with volunteer work, progressed to coaching junior varsity teams, and ultimately led her to captain varsity teams for the past 16 seasons. However, her influence extends far beyond the volleyball court. A respected figure in the community, she has made significant contributions through her work in Mashomack and her journalistic endeavors.

Guidance and inspiration

The core of Belt’s success lies in the guidance and inspiration she received from her high school and college coaches, particularly Andrea Dutcher of Cornell University. The lessons learned from these mentors have shaped Belt’s coaching philosophy and approach to nurturing young athletes.

Triumphs and challenges

Coaching at a small school comes with a unique set of challenges. Busy student schedules, encouraging inexperienced students to try their volleyball skills – these are everyday scenarios for the belt. However, she finds great satisfaction in the personal growth and confidence building she observes in athletes. Her ability to maintain a balanced life through careful planning, symbolized by her “Legendary Portfolio,” and self-care routines, has enabled her to overcome these challenges with grace.

Belt’s unwavering commitment to her community and passionate advocacy for volleyball continue to inspire new generations of athletes on Shelter Island. Her story is a testament to the power of dedication, resilience and passion.
