The City of Avondale has broken ground on a new sand volleyball complex at The BLVD.
Members of the Avondale Parks and Recreation Department and city officials participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for the project.
The complex is located on a one-acre lot on The BLVD, adjacent to the existing Randall McDaniel Sports Complex, at 765 N. 114th Ave. The former Avondale Town Center was renamed in 2019 as The BLVD (The Boulevard), which will cover 356 acres and feature six shopping, dining, entertainment and living concepts, with pedestrian-friendly streets and outdoor activities.
Amenity facilities at the new complex will include up to five dedicated competition sand volleyball courts; Perimeter fencing for security and privacy; Spectator seating for the show; Shade structures for rest during matches; Drinking fountains and automated water system for hydration; Security cameras to enhance safety and surveillance; Landscape improvements to beautify surrounding areas; And a toilet building for players and spectators.
The $2.9 million project is expected to be completed by June next year. A $162,500 grant from the Arizona Sports Tourism Association helped fund this project.
“This groundbreaking concert marks the beginning of a transformative project that will enhance our city’s entertainment landscape,” Avondale Parks and Recreation Director Brian Hughes shared in a press release. “We look forward to completing the Sands Volleyball Complex, which will serve as a hub for greater sporting and community engagement.”
The project’s civil engineering and landscaping will be completed by Gavin & Barker Inc. The contract to build the facility was awarded to the Chasse Building team.
