Balser & Leese win events in UNC gymnastics season opener

Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Rutgers gymnastics began the 2024 season with a team score of 193.400 in UNC’s quad meet with Ball State and Utah State on Friday night at Carmichael Arena. The Scarlet Knights picked up the win over Utah State (193.175), while falling short of the 2023 NCAA regional qualifiers Ball State (194.925) and host UNC (193.725).

  • Avery Balsr He earned Rutgers’ first win in an event of the season with a 9.875 on bars, holding on to the landing and holding on for a high score on opening night.
  • Emily Liz, served as a meet captain for the Scarlet Knights, where he led by example with strong results in three events. She followed up her 9.775 vault and 9.800 floor routines with a career-high 9.850 on beam, earning the beam title for the first time in her career.
  • junior Elijah Ard He returned to the all-around service with a 38.625, 9.800 ahead on bars.
  • big Stephanie Zanella She began her season with a 9.800 on beam (6th out of 24) and a 9.700 on floor.
  • A student in his second year of studies Harmony Webster He had Rutgers’ second-best floor score with a 9.725.
  • big Emily Liz She continued her momentum on beam, winning the event for the first time in her career with a career-high of 9.850.
  • A student in his second year of studies Gabriel Dilde She set a career high on vault with 9.850.
  • Dildy also made her debut on collegiate floor, scoring a 9.725.
  • A student in his second year of studies Rachel Riley The collegiate debut came with a 9.725 on vault.
  • student Olivia DeNovi She impressed in her collegiate debut, scoring 9,700 points on bars.
  • student Matthys Renz They made their collective debut on Beam.

Rutgers will host its 2024 home opener on Saturday, January 13 at 2pm at Jersey Mike’s Arena in a quadrilateral meeting against Southern Connecticut State, Oregon State and Utica. This will be the first gymnastics meet in school history for the Utica Pioneers of NCAA Division III.
