PULLMAN — Washington State is in on the hunt for its next head volleyball coach.

The new president is Corey Schroeder, a former WSU assistant coach whose hiring was announced Friday. He replaces former coach Gene Greaney, who left for the same job at West Virginia last month.

“We are excited to name Corey as our head volleyball coach,” WSU athletic director Pat Chun said in a statement. “Corey brings a new energy and passion to WSU volleyball. It has been clear throughout this year that he has earned the respect of our team and was a key component in the overall success of last season. We look forward to watching Corey lead and build our volleyball program.”

Last season, Schroeder helped lead the Cougars to one of the best seasons in program history, a 26-8 run that included a run to the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament and an AP ranking as high as No. 4. The Cougars finished the season. Ranked No. 11.

“I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity to lead Washington State volleyball into the next chapter in the program’s storied history,” Schroeder said via press release. “Thank you Pat Chun and [Deputy Director of Athletics/SWA] Anne McCoy for giving me their trust and support throughout this process.

“In my first year at Washington State, the energy I felt from the Pullman community, Cougar fans, and individuals within the Washington State Athletic Department was overwhelming. They are all reasons why Pullman feels like home, and they are the same reason our student-athletes love their experience at Washington State.” WASHINGTON We have a group of high-character players returning next season and I’m excited to build on the foundation we’ll create together this spring.

In addition to coaching, Schroeder’s duties for the 2023 season included organizing recruiting databases, producing recruiting content, maximizing matchup planning through statistical analyzes of WSU and potential opponents and implementing the use of NeuroFuel to enhance mental performance during training and competition.

Schroeder began serving as an assistant coach for the WSU women’s volleyball team in the spring of 2023. After helping the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay women’s volleyball team to three 20-win seasons in five years, serving as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator, he decided to move to the Palouse.
