street. JONES, NL – A community in the St. John’s area has discovered that transporting Olympic-grade beach volleyball sand is scarce, complicated and expensive.

The city of Paradise is hosting beach volleyball events during the 2025 Canada Games, paying about $360,000 for sand from Nova Scotia that meets standards set by the FIVB and followed by the Canadian Volleyball Federation.

Mayor Dan Bobbitt isn’t bothered by the cost, and says he hopes the new beach volleyball courts will attract more big matches in the future.

Ed Drakic of Volleyball Canada says sand that meets their standards must come from a natural source, as the grains from mechanically ground rock are too coarse and compressed too easily.
