Australia captain Pat Cummins is hoping to set IPL 2024 as a base to launch himself into T20 mode ahead of next year’s World Cup which the USA and West Indies will jointly host in June. Cummins, who pulled out of IPL 2023 due to a heavy international workload, earned the second-highest salary at an auction in Dubai on Tuesday – Rs 20.50 crore from Sunrisers Hyderabad. His teammate Mitchell Starc was snapped up by Kolkata Knight Riders for a whopping Rs 24.75 crore, the highest ever contract amount in the IPL.
“I feel like I haven’t played a significant amount of T20 cricket and, in some ways, I feel like I haven’t played the best T20 cricket for a little while,” cricket.com.au quoted Cummins as saying.
“I’m really excited…next year to try and get some games in before the World Cup and push the case to not only make the team but to get back to where I feel like I can play in T20 cricket.” Cummins’ last foray into the IPL was for KKR in 2022, where he smashed the fastest men’s T20 half-century by an Australian off just 14 balls.
“We are expected to join SRH in the upcoming IPL season,” Cummins said in a video on Sunrisers’ Instagram page.
“I’ve heard a lot about the Orange Army. I’ve played in Hyderabad many times and always loved it, so I can’t wait to get started.” Cummins is joined by teammate and eventual World Cup champion Travis Head at SRH after the left-handed opener was picked for Rs 6.8 crore.
“It’s great to see another Aussie at Travhead there too. I think we’re going to have a lot of fun this season and hopefully have a lot of success,” Cummins said.
