Pakistan will be hoping that 2024 will be far less turbulent after a season full of disappointment both on and off the field.
In 2023, the team in green rose to number one in the ODI rankings, but were quickly brought to earth during an unforgettable World Cup in India where they failed to qualify for the semi-finals and saw their famous bowling attack ripped to shreds.
After that, things started to unravel when Babar Azam relinquished the captaincy in all competitions amid rumors of infighting and mistrust. The entire Pakistan administration was overhauled and Shan Masood was given the Test captaincy while fast bowler Shaheen Afridi was appointed T20 captain.
A full Test tour of Australia right after a poor World Cup and a dramatic reset of the system is not ideal, but that is exactly where Pakistan are now. A weak bowling attack against the full-strength world champions at home is unlikely to turn things around anytime soon.
However, there is still hope as Pakistan prepares for a hectic 2024 that includes a T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA.
