
Dec. 22 — HUNTSVILLE — With a second-place finish in Region 16, 5A play, Huntsville volleyball was presented with an award for its efforts on the court.
The Lady Hornets finished with a 7-3 district record and a playoff bid. For action, Huntsville selected two honorable mentions, two first-team selections, two second-team selections, three honorable mentions and the entire roster to the all-academic team.
Senior Chelsea Butler and junior Krystle Kababasay both earned superlative honors.
Butler, a Sam Houston volleyball player, was voted area player of the year for her work on the court. Throughout the season, she tallied 418 kills, 41 aces and 87 blocks for the Lady Hornets.
Kababasay started the season in the back row for Huntsville and was eventually moved to the libero position where she thrived. The junior had 456 receptions on the season and was second on the team in digs with 290.
Huntsville’s first team honors came on a pair of outside hitters. Juniors Miley Thiessen and Isabelle Summel received their season awards.
Theisen finished second on the team to Butler in kills with 257 during the season. She also added 37 items.
Summel was all over the field and took down 167 kills herself. While the offensive surge was going on, she also led the Lady Hornets in receptions and digs.
For second team honors, Huntsville senior Madison Elkins and sophomore Carly Huff.
Elkins started the season as a libero but an injury forced her to transfer as she returned as Huntsville’s defensive specialist. Elkins finished the season with 237 digs and 472 receptions.
Huff came into her role this season as a return specialist and outside hitter. The sophomore became a player and had 106 receptions and 1,523 kills. She also ranked third on the Lady Hornets in aces.
Huntsville junior setter Jayda Paschal, senior Paige Holland and freshman Chloe Lehman were all given honorable mentions for the district.
Pascal was the starter for the Lady Hornets and compiled 803 assists for Huntsville. Holland assumed the role of setter and had 84 assists for Huntsville. Lyman came to the varsity late and has become a solid asset off Huntsville’s bench.
On top of the on-field accolades, Huntsville named all 13 members to the All-Academic Team.
The Lady Hornets’ season ended in the bi-district playoff round. Huntsville dropped its playoff game to Whitehouse.
