Pakistani government bans Pakistan Cricket Board

The Pakistani government has reportedly imposed a two-year ban on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) from selling the rights to the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and international media. The Cricket Management Committee issued this directive when it began the bidding process for these rights.

The government’s Inter-Provincial Coordination (Sports) Ministry has issued a notice to the PCB, asking them to seek government permission before concluding any important deals. This has disrupted PCB’s plans, preventing them from releasing the schedule for the upcoming ninth edition of the PSL.

“The Inter-Provincial Coordination (Sports) Ministry government has issued a notification, stating that henceforth, the CMC/PCB must seek permission from the government before finalizing any important deal,” a source revealed.

The Cricket Board expected to make significant profits from the sale of rights, but uncertainty now looms over whether the Cricket Board will be able to secure suitable prices for the media rights. Technical bids for the PSL broadcast were initially scheduled to be submitted by December 22, but a meeting between the Prime Minister and PCB Cricket Management Committee (CMC) Chairman Zaka Ashraf led to a delay.

The Project Coordination Board notified potential bidders of the delay, postponing the submission of technical bids to the beginning of January. They have postponed the bidding process for the broadcast and media rights of the PSL by two weeks.
