The Seymour Varsity Gymnastics Team is ready for the start of the 2023-24 season

On Monday, the Seymour varsity gymnastics team will begin its 2023-24 season, hosting Owen Valley at home. The team, under the supervision of coach Angie Villarreal, is working to hone its skills and mental preparation, with the aim of achieving a strong and clear start.

A combination of experience and new talent

Seymour’s team includes a balanced mix of veteran athletes and club competitors who are transitioning to high school gymnastics. Notable returnees include Neve Cockerham, Gillian Bumbleberg, Mackenzie Bryson and Mia Daily, who have focused on skill development in the lead-up to the season. Cockerham, in particular, has taken on a leadership role, providing critical guidance and support to freshmen Ella Brock and Vivian Newkirk.

Overcoming challenges

Despite experiencing some injury setbacks, such as Bryson’s shoulder injury which limited her participation, the team’s spirit remains high. The freshmen are adjusting well to the high school level, with Brock showing great enthusiasm in his vault and floor routines, while also emphasizing the importance of self-care.

Continuous improvement strategy

Villarreal’s strategy revolves around starting the season with strong actions and gradually incorporating new skills and combinations as the season progresses. The goal is to promote continuous improvement, allowing the team to reach its full potential come the start of the season.

Seymour’s schedule includes several meets at their home venue, Gymnastics Lane. The team’s journey toward the postseason begins at the end of February, with the sectional meet scheduled for Franklin Central.
